In 2005 after traveling to Venice, Italy with my husband, Marc, we took a boat ride to a little island off the coast of Venice called Murano. We watched the local artists turn a piece of glass into a beautiful work of art right before our eyes! I fell in love with the glass and couldn't stop talking about how so many people back in the states would love to have this unique jewelry! I had never seen such beauty in glass jewelry and I was not familiar with the world renowned Murano Glass, but I knew it was something special that you couldn't get just anywhere. We decided to talk to a few of the local store owners and artists to see if they would like to have their items sold back in the United States. They were very excited! Murano Glass Designs was born. My husband and I now travel to Italy at least once every year to hand pick the items and ensure that each piece is authentic and locally made.
Each artist hand makes the Murano glass pieces in a small studio - sometimes in their homes. Such time and pride are put into each handcrafted piece. Each one is truly a work of art! The techniques used in making the artisan glass pieces are the same as the glass forming techniques used since the early 1200's. The glass is heated and formed by hand into the piece of glass art. Some pieces are formed by blowing through a pipe. This glass making art skill takes years to perfect!
When you see the jewelry and other glass gifts we offer here at Murano Glass Designs, you will appreciate the beauty and the uniqueness of each handcrafted piece. I enjoy bringing a little bit of Italy home with me to pass along to you.
